Adapted from Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
Why are we looking at these factors in a unit on class?
As budding sociologists, in our continuing quest to critically consume information, consider the following recent article, posted in the North Cook News:
- Who authored this article (Who made this message)?
- Who owns/runs this website (Who paid for this)?
- What is this about (and what makes you think that)?
- What are the sources of the information, ideas, or assertions?
- Is this article fact, opinion, or something else?
- How credible is this (and what makes you think that)?
Questions adapted from NAMLE (National Association of Media Literacy Education)
As I mentioned in class, this is an opportunity to donate gently-used or like-new books to incarcerated women. I will start collecting books on Monday for a weekend donation. Here are some important links:
- The news article explaining the organization, Chicago Books to Women in Prison
- The list of books needed: please do NOT bring a book without reading the very specific descriptions
- The list of special requests
If you choose to donate, you must specify exactly how your book matches the category or need on the lists linked above.
Thanks!
